No, I'm not going to say that "Sorry" is the toughest word to say. In my opinion, the toughest word to utter is no. To those who don't have the need to save everyone around them it can be quite easy. I have always been one of those people can help...
Need heavy stuff lifted? I'm there.
Need money? I'm there.
Need a shoulder to cry on? Guess what?? I'm there!
After a lifetime of saying yes, it makes the toughest word to be no. Everyone knows that you will say yes. You will be that voice of in the storm that says, yes. They will come to you and envision you fixing whatever their problem might be. They will lean heavily on you to make their problems go away.
Then you hit them with "no, I can't help you." They look confused, they didn't even sense that coming. No one else would even explain, it would just be the answer. Why is it that the lifesavers among us feel that they have to explain themselves?
Others tell you, "Come on now, it's your answer you don't have to explain it to anyone."
Yet, uttering no leaves that unsettling knot in your stomach and a taste of acid in the back of your throat. That pang of guilt, but after a few times of it-- it doesn't change. It will never change; you grew up with that thrust upon you. All you can do is buy antacids.
